Why build air-tight?

(At least) nine reasons for planning and building houses in a way that the building shell is as air-tight as a brick-built, plastered wall:

The calculated value of insulation can be achieved only in air-tight buildings.
There are no awkward cold drafts caused by air flowing through cracks and gaps.
Habitation comfort is growing; areas of cold air on the floor will be avoided.
Damp air in the rooms can not infiltrate into the construction. Damage to the building (rotting and mildew) can be prevented.
In order to run an automatic ventilation system optimally, an air-tight building shell is required.
An uncontrolled penetration of allergens and pollutants – for example cigarette smoke from the apartments of the neighbours - will be prevented.
The danger of a blaze release will be smaller. There will be no penetration of smoke fumes.
The insulation of noise will improve.
An air-tight building shell corresponding technical standards is regulated by law (DIN 4108-7 and EnEV 2002).

An air-tight building shell requires accurate planning!
